While some cities seem to be packed with shopping malls resulting in empty streets, Madrid seems to be the complete opposite. From around 10 in the
morning until 10 in the evening you can enjoy walking around in the streets of Madrid shopping together with thousands of others from small and big shops along the streets. In the home country of Zara you will find the typical fashion shops like H&M, Zara, Breshka, Blanco, Mango, C&A, Guess, Calzedonia, Stradivarius and many more. These shops can be found in streets in all directions if you start your shopping tour at Puerta del Sol in the centre of Madrid.
For a mixture of all kinds of stuff, a visit to El Cortes Ingles can be recommended. Inside El Cortes Ingles you can find quite a lot of exclusive shops, so for those with much money in their wallet this is a good option.
On a rainy day many people still look for the “typical shopping mall” and though they are hard to find, some are to be found in Madrid.
The most central shopping mall can be found at the metro stop Principe Pio and it is a very cool place, as it formerly was a railway station which now has been made into a shopping mall. Here you can find fast food, a cinema and quite a lot of fashion shops.
Another interesting place in the centre of Madrid is Mercado Fuencarral, located along Calle de Fuencarral, between Gran Via and Tribunal. The most famous fashion shops can not be found here, but rather unknown brands at good prices.
For a big mall in the outskirts of the metro system of Madrid a visit should be made to La Vaguada. This shopping mall is located by the metro stop Barrio del Pilar on the 9th metro line, and it is way bigger than the two former malls mentioned. On a rainy day it is possible to spend many hours here. A big grocery store, Alcampo (Auchan), can be found in La Vaguada.
If you are looking for something different, you should visit Mercuado de San Miguel where you can grab something to eat or buy fresh fish and the famous Spanish Serrano ham and other delicious bites from Spain. This is located not far from Plaza Mayor.
